Two operas
One marriage has just begun, and another is on the rocks.
Duke Bluebeard hopes that young Judith’s love will show him the meaning of life. She has left everything for a man before whom the whole world trembles – what is he actually hiding behind his seven doors?
Dinah and Sam are a couple desperately fighting to maintain a façade of the perfect American suburban dream and the perceived ideals of Man and Woman.
Two very different musical worlds by two masters from the 20th century. Béla Bartók’s only opera, Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, is a sombre psychological drama for two singers and a large, magnificently scored orchestra.
Leonard Bernstein’s jazzy Trouble in Tahiti is inspired by the pop and film music of the 1950s. Throughout the piece three other voices comment on the leading roles, Dinah and Sam.
Both works highlight what is perhaps the greatest drama in history – marriage.
