Opera in four acts
Carmen works in the cigarette factory in Seville. Beautiful and headstrong, she is an erotic fantasy for the soldiers at the barracks. Don José has never heard the like as he listens to her sing of love. He forgets his betrothed Micaëla, who waits for him in their home village, and pursues Carmen. But Don José yearns to possess love, while Carmen’s heart must remain free. Then the bullfighter Escamillo appears, as proud and free a spirit as Carmen herself…
Carmen loves whomever she wishes, but must pay a high price for her love. Georges Bizet’s music is both captivating and demonically passionate in the world’s perhaps most well-known opera. Carmen is the composer’s vision of Spain – a country he never actually visited.
