The Royal Opera 2009/2010

 

The new opera director, Royal Court Singer Birgitta Svendén, presents the season at the Royal Swedish Opera. 

The Swedish mezzo-soprano Katarina Karnéus creates her first role at the Royal Swedish Opera in a new production of Handel´s Serse (Xerxes) directed by Daniel Slater. Further soloists include Matilda Paulsson, Lars Arvidson and Malin Byström. Alexander Stoehr conducts. Serse will open on October 10th 2009.

Pier Giorgio Morandi, who generally conducts the Royal Opera´s Italian repertoire, will tackle Richard Strauss Elektra with Katarina Dalayman in the name-part, creating her first Elektra on stage. The production team is the same as for the Royal Opera´s “Ring”, Staffan Valdemar Holm (direction), Bente Lycke Möller ( stage and costume design), and Torben Lendorph (light design). Première on December 12th  2009.

An illustrious company with some of Sweden’s foremost opera singers and actors (Emma Vetter, Michael Weinius and Jan Malmsjö, to mention but a few) take part in a new production of Johann Strauss J: r´s Die Fledermaus, which will be directed by Ann-Margret Pettersson and conducted by Stefan Solyom. Opening on January 30th 2010.

There will be a world première on March 6th: The children’s opera The Boy and the Love of Three Oranges with music by Leif Hultquist and produced in cooperation with the puppet theatre company Dockteater Tittut..

Also new, and opening on March 27th,, is Le nozze di Figaro, directed and stage designed by Ole Anders Tandberg and featuring soloists like Karl-Magnus Fredriksson, Maria Fontosh, Elin Rombo, Johan Edholm and Linda Tuvås.

Among notable revivals (from November 11th) there will be a Die Walküre with Michael Weinius (Siegmund), Gitta Maria Sjöberg (Sieglinde), Han-Peter König (Hunding) and Terje Stensvold (Wotan). 

 

The Ballet director Marc Ribaud presents the Royal Swedish Ballet season

One of the highlights of the The Royal Swedish Ballet´s new season is one of the major classical full length ballets, Coppelia, with choreography by the company’s own artistic director Marc Ribaud. A new interpretation inspired by the works of the pioneering French film maker Georges Méliès. Première on November 6th.

Bolero, Le Noces, Le sacre de printemps, which will open on April 23rd, will form an homage to Diaghilev´s Les Ballets Russes and the Belgian choreographer Maurice Bejart who died in 2007. The choreographies for the two firs mentioned works are made by Thierry Malandain and Angelin Preljocaj respectively, while Le sacre de printemps is performed in the version by Bejart.

In addition to this there will be notable revivals of the triple bill Christe Matthews Ek, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Onegin, Romeo and Juliet and 2x Ballet Gala.
