Can love conquer all? Set against a background of war, religious strife and power play, society is collapsing. The young Aida is caught in the crossfire of two warring parties and is captured by the enemy. Throwing caution to the wind, she falls in love with war hero Radamès, who’s on the side of the enemy. At the same time, the king’s daughter Amneris has also fallen in love with Radamès and tries to win his heart. The relentless love between two young people fights to survive in a reality of complete chaos.
Giuseppe Verdi's Aida is a complex, heartfelt love story that plays out against a backdrop of war, fanaticism, slavery and martyrdom - epic in size, but always staying close to the emotions. Premiering in 1871 in Cairo, it quickly became one of opera’s most beloved creations. Director Michael Cavanagh’s interpretation of Aida focuses on the pressures of today and the inner turmoil that devours the heroic yet vulnerable characters in the opera. It premiered on stage in February 2018, and was a roaring success among audiences and critics alike.
Aida will be broadcasted live for the first time on OperaVision, the new platform for live streaming. OperaVision was launched in 2017 by 30 opera companies from 18 countries. The platform is part of Opera Europa, a European association for opera companies and festivals. The Royal Swedish Opera has been part of the association ever since it started up in 2003 with the CEO, Birgitta Svendén, as the Board Chairperson.
How did the French-Prussian war affect the first premiere of Aida ? How did the audiences receive the piece back then?
