Verdi's AIDA - an operatic TRIUMPH at the Royal Swedish Opera

Can love conquer all? Society is falling apart against the backdrop of war, power and faith. We find Aida imprisoned by the enemy, caught in the crossfire between two warring parties. Against all reason, she falls in love with Radamès. We watch as the impossible, but unyielding, love between two young people struggles to survive in a chaotic world.

The director Michael Cavanagh’s highly charged, modern interpretation of the classic opera – one of Verdi’s all-time successes, which premiered in Cairo in 1871 – has all the elements of a contemporary drama. The production focuses on the restless minds of the opera’s heroic, but vulnerable, characters. The premiere in 2018 was a major success. Svenska Dagbladet described it as “pure pleasure” and Dagens Nyheter found it “hard to imagine a better and more refreshing Aida”. Christina Nilsson made her debut on the Royal Opera’s main stage in this highly acclaimed interpretation of Aida. “It is a major breakthrough,” wrote Svenska Dagbladet.
