YOUNG OPERA

»Everyone is welcome at Young Opera, and strive in every way to make our opera house accessible to everyone«

/ELLEN LAMM
Artistic Director Young Opera

»The idea that art and culture are absolutely necessary for us as individuals, but also for our democracy itself and its survival, is the foundation for Young Opera and our work. Children, just like adults, want to feel touched, seen, challenged, and inspired, and also to encounter new ideas. Opera and ballet invite you to magical worlds filled with emotions, movements and music. Here, all of the audience's senses are addressed directly. We want as many children, young people and adults as possible to have the opportunity to visit us and take part in the fantastic things that happen here. Everyone is welcome at Young Opera, and strive in every way to make our opera house accessible to everyone.”

This autumn, we are proud to present a world premiere of a new dance piece: Forever. The piece is mainly aimed at an audience in junior high school and revolves around thoughts about life and death, sorrow and hope, but also about group dynamics and belonging, and is created by Mari Carrasco, one of today's most interesting and acclaimed choreographers. Together with her creative team – Mikael Karlsson, celebrated for several collaborations with the choreographer Alexander Ekman and most recently for the opera Melancholia; as well as Jenny Nordberg's at naturalistic yet artificial scenography, and Mira Svanberg's evocative lighting design – they create a performance entirely based on the venue.«

One of the Royal Swedish Opera’s most important missions is to put on exciting performances for children and young people, and to make it possible for them to pursue culture. During the last ten years Young Opera has been and continue to be the state-of-the-art for opera and ballet in Sweden.

PERFORMANCES

Every season we create opera and dance performances for children and young people.

ACTIVITIES

In addition to exciting performances, we also throw open the doors of the Opera House to Childrens’ Saturdays, school holiday activities and family days. The activities we offer vary from guided tours of the Opera House and trying on costumes to mini performances and concerts.

COOPERATION WITH SCHOOLS

Young Opera also engages in active school outreach, and our educational programme offers both short and long-term projects, one of which is part of the Skapande skola (Creative School) programme. We also arrange field trips to the Opera House and teachers’ evenings, and we schedule weekend and holiday activities, host family days and put on special performances for school groups.
