BERNSTEIN'S satirical operetta Candide turns the Opera on its head!

Candide, a naive young man, travels around the world desperately searching for what his teacher Pangloss means when he says that humans live in the »best of all possible worlds«. On top of it all he has lost his beloved Cunegonde and is prepared to do anything to get her back. How can you live by what you teach in a world that is swamped in hypocrisy? What is the point of big ideas when both your heart and the earth are on fire?

The Enlightenment philosopher and author Voltaire aimed his pen at the double standards of his time with his virulent satire Candide. The American composer Leonard Bernstein’s version examines western man’s bestial history with the detachment and piercing humour of the operetta form. Ole Anders Tandberg has made a playful, surrealist and challenging interpretation of Bernstein’s jazzy music. This is the chance to see the sparkling, colourful production, which premiered in spring 2020.
