DIE WALKÜRE – the struggle between gods and men, love and power – the second part in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen

A visual and existential Gesamtkunstwerk about a turbulent world of love, power and incest where a violent struggle rages between good and evil, gods and humans. Wotan, the highest god, attempts to recover an enchanted ring that that will make him ruler of the world.

Die Walküre – part two in the Ring cycle – is a dramatic story of how humans long for harmony in a chaotic world, about the troubled relationship between father and daughter and about the price of power and liberty. Staffan Valdemar Holm’s version has been acclaimed for the way he has defined each character through his direction, especially the relationship between the father, Wotan, and his daughter, Brünnhilde. The strict, Nordic décor by Bente Lykke Møller is deeply rooted in the Royal Swedish Opera’s long Wagner tradition and invites the audience to a visual and existential synthesis of the arts to the accompaniment of the most divine music.
The wonderful music is performed by some of Sweden’s most acclaimed international opera singers. The dramatic sopranos Irene Theorin and Ingela Brimberg alternate as Brünnhilde. Cornelia Beskow sings the role of Sieglinde and Katarina Dalayman appears as Fricka. All under the baton of the Opera’s new music director, Alan Gilbert.
