»The lovers are bathed in a Romantic glow« SvD
Giselle is a peasant girl who falls in love with Albert. But Albert is not the farmer he claims to be, he is a nobleman and already betrothed to Bathilde. Giselle dies from a broken heart and turns into a “wili”, a fate that befalls girls that have been deserted before their wedding. The wilies dance with their queen by a lake at night. A repentant Albert arrives at the lake to mourn and is drawn into the wilies enchanting dance. But whoever dances with Giselle must pay a high price …
The ballet about Giselle and her broken heart is based on a text by Théophile Gautier and inspired by Heinrich Heine’s poetry collection De l’Allemagne and Victor Hugo’s Fantômes. Giselle premiered in Paris in 1841. This masterwork of classical ballet introduced the pointe technique that defines the classic Romantic style. The choreography for the Royal Swedish Opera production is by Natalia Makarova.
