KRÓL ROGER – The Crown Weighs Heavy...

King Roger is the rational one – one who rules with logic and order. At his side is Queen Roxana. Their marriage is loveless and childless, and the Queen is searching for meaning in life. A charismatic prophet appears and takes possession of Roger’s country, family and mind, while proclaiming truth, happiness and pleasure. And chaos and death.

Polish composer Karol Szymanowski’s opera Król Roger was first staged in 1926 at the opera in Warsaw. The music has been compared to that of Richard Strauss, receiving accolades for its distinctive poetic tonal language filled with virtuoso arias, symphonic timbres and dramatic choral sections. This is the first time that Król Roger is being staged in Sweden, opening on March 16, 2019. Directed by film director Mariusz Trelinski, who’s following in the footsteps of Kieslowski and Wajda. In his production of Król Roger, the story plays out within King Roger himself, as a conflict between the rational and the irrational, between order and chaos.

Król Rogeris a co-production with Teatr Wielki, the Polish national opera.
