Carmen says she wants to be free. That she has the right to love whoever she chooses. But José stands in the way of her freedom. This time, Georges Bizet’s classical opera from 1875 takes place in a reality that we can all relate to; a factory for cheap souvenirs, where masculinity is played out in the martial arts arena. One day, the rebellious factory worker Carmen gives José, the young foreman, the eye. This is the prelude to a story of passion, jealousy and death.

Johanna Garpe, whose work includes the critically acclaimed Dialogues des Carmélites, is back at the Royal Swedish Opera, this time with a new staging of Carmen – one of the most beloved operas in the world and a welcome addition to any season. Garpe is a director of opera, theatre and TV, always with a distinct contemporary interpretation. Behind the costume design is Nina Sandström, who also created costumes for the Dialogues des Carmélites and Medea at the Royal Swedish Opera, and Fanny and Alexander at the Royal Dramatic Theatre.
