»A major triumph for the Royal Swedish Opera«
A dramatic love story that begins with a lavish wedding between Lieutenant Pinkerton of the US navy, and his beloved Butterfly. She believes he will always love and be true to her, and she is prepared to wait for him indefinitely. When Pinkerton finally returns, he finds a confused woman and her child, still in the now deserted place where the wedding took place. As he takes the child from her, he watches as Butterfly brings out her father’s dagger…
Giacomo Puccini’s opera about Cio-Cio San, or Butterfly, who turns away from her family, her faith and her culture in order to marry the American lieutenant Pinkerton is one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the world. This production, directed by Kirsten Harms, has been sold out since it premiered in 2014 with Asmik Gregorian, who is making her eagerly awaited return to the Royal Swedish Opera after having won international triumphs on some of the world’s leading opera stages. (»Grigorian was born to sing Madama Butterfly,« wrote Svenska Dagbladet after the premiere).
