Horn player Stefan Dohr appears as soloist in Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings in autumn 2026, performing with the Royal Swedish Orchestra under Music Director Alan Gilbert. He has been Principal Horn of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 1993 and has also established an international career as a soloist and chamber musician.
As a soloist, Dohr has performed with orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with conductors including Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Simon Rattle, Bernard Haitink and Christian Thielemann.
Stefan Dohr is a passionate advocate for new music and has inspired several composers to write works for the horn, including Toshio Hosokawa, Wolfgang Rihm, Hans Abrahamsen, Jörg Widmann and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Dohr gave the world premiere of Salonen’s Horn Concerto with the Orchestre de Paris in 2025.
As a chamber musician, Dohr has collaborated with artists including Ian Bostridge, Maurizio Pollini, Kirill Gerstein and Carolin Widmann. He is a member of Ensemble Wien-Berlin and the Philharmonic Octet Berlin.
Stefan Dohr studied in Essen and Cologne and held principal horn positions in Frankfurt, Nice and at the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin before joining the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1993. He also regularly gives masterclasses and is a Guest Professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
