The last pieces of the puzzle are in place for the Royal Swedish Opera's temporary residencies during the renovation 2027-2032.
The puzzle is complete — this is where the Royal Swedish Opera will perform during the renovation 2027-2032
The last pieces are in place for the Opera House's renovation and the Royal Swedish Opera's temporary move from the beautiful 19th century building. Between 2027 and 2032, you can enjoy opera and ballet performances at Stockholm's new music venue, Gasometer. And the Young Opera section will find a temporary home at the Museum of Performing Arts (Scenkonstmuseet).
Until the end of autumn 2026, there will be full activity at the Royal Swedish Opera as usual, later on the major renovation will begin - and the Opera will continue to produce opera and ballet, but now in Norra Djurgårdstaden and at the Gasometer stage, which will become the Royal Swedish Opera's main stage for opera and ballet. The activities for children and young people have found their residence in the heart of Stockholm, at the Museum of Performing Arts.

Opera and ballet at Gasometer
The unique gasometer in Norra Djurgårdsstaden is being operated by Cirkus Venues and will be transformed into a spectacular venue. The Opera will be the main resident in Gasometer and will continue to offer a varied repertoire of opera, ballet, dance and classical concerts while the Opera House is being renovated between 2027-2032.
Gasometer is housed in a former industrial building, a gas clock, located in the Norra Djurgårdsstaden district, which has been transformed from an industrial area into a modern and vibrant city district. A hotel is being built in the adjacent former industrial premises and construction of housing and offices is already underway nearby, which will link Norra Djurgårdsstaden with Stockholm's inner city. Gasometer is owned by the City of Stockholm and operated by Cirkus Venues, which also operates Cirkus and Hasselbacken on Djurgården, among other things.
It is easy to travel from the "old" Opera House (stop Karl XII:s torg) to the Gasometer (stop Jaktgatan) by bus 57. The Gasometer can also be reached by bus lines 6 and 75 and by metro to Ropsten station. In Ropsten, choose the exit named Hjorthagen. If you turn right when you come out of the station, you can easily see the Gasometer.
In February 2027, the Royal Swedish Opera will gain access to this completely new stage in Norra Djurgårdsstaden.
Young Opera to the Museum of Performing Arts
The Museum of Performing Arts (Scenkonstmuseet) will become the permanent stage for the Young Opera section during the approximately five years that the Opera House at Gustav Adolfs Torg is being renovated, starting in 2027. This begins a perennial collaboration between the museum and the Royal Swedish Opera, with the goal of jointly creating performing arts for more children and young people.
The opportunity to be located in the premises of the Museum of Performing Arts means that Young Opera will have a permanent stage during the entire renovation period when the Opera House is closed. At the same time, Young Opera will continue its educational activities at schools and meeting places, both around Stockholm and in other locations and on other stages in collaboration with cultural institutions around the country. The move to the Museum of Performing Arts means an opportunity to operate on a permanent stage in the middle of central Stockholm. The collaboration also means a close dialogue with a museum that shares the ambition of making performing arts accessible to a young audience.
It is easy to get to the Museum of Performing Arts and the easiest way to travel is by tram or bus (e.g. lines 1, 2, 7, 57, 69, 76) to the Nybroplan stop or by metro to the Östermalmstorg stop.
We are also here during the renovation
In addition to our two stages, rehearsal rooms are also needed for our artistic collectives, technical and artistic support functions and administration. Musikaliska will be home to the Royal Swedish Orchestra, music library and archives. Hus 10 will be home to administration, production, technology and more (in connection to Gasometer). In Gäddviken, the Royal Swedish Ballet and the chorus will have their rehearsal rooms, and the makeup and costume department will have their production located there. In Flemingsberg, we have had a new production center together with the Royal Dramatic Theatre since 2024.

The renovation of the Opera House
The opera building, built between 1892 and 1898 according to drawings by Axel Anderberg, is a well-preserved example of the late 19th century theatre and architectural ideals with great cultural and historical value. In the almost 120 years since its construction, the artistic activities have constantly developed. The premises, however, have mainly retained the structure and functions that were established when it was built, adapted to the late 19th century.
The opera building is part of our Swedish cultural heritage and is Sweden's national stage for opera and ballet, but it is currently in poor condition. Therefore, the building is now being renovated and given a gentle update. In January 2025, the Royal Swedish Opera and the Swedish Property Board presented a joint renovation plan for the opera building, in which the property will receive modernised, functional premises and all artistic activities will be gathered in the building. This is made possible by strengthening state funding with private donations to the Royal Swedish Opera.
The evacuation period for the Opera House will be up to five years. The State Property Board (SFV) has begun a renovation of the building's facades and roof, which are in urgent need of repair. Operations in the Opera House itself will continue into the later dart of autumn 2026. The move to the new stages will begin in late in 2026.
