ROYAL SWEDISH ORCHESTRA

Skilled ORCHESTRA with a long history

Immigrant fiddlers, "pipers and trumpeters" laid the foundation for the Royal Swedish Orchestra (Kungliga Hovkapellet). Almost 500 years later, they are not only one of the world's oldest orchestras but also Sweden's largest with its 105 musicians. From being a court music institution under king Gustav Vasa, they are, since the Royal Swedish Opera was founded in 1773, the heart of the house and unite all its art forms.

In addition to playing in performances of operas and ballets, »Hovkapellet's« musicians perform symphonic concerts, chamber and lunch concerts. The Opera's musical director and Royal Court Kapellmeister, renowned conductor Alan Gilbert, has a special responsibility for the »Hovkapellet«.
