Swedish tenor Daniel Johansson is one of the Nordic region’s leading dramatic tenors, with a wide-ranging international career focused particularly on the Wagner and Puccini repertoire. During the 2025/26 season, he sang Calaf in Puccini’s Turandot at the Royal Swedish Opera. In June 2026, he also performed Calaf’s famous aria “Nessun dorma” at the Golden Wedding Anniversary Concert for the Swedish King and Queen at the Royal Swedish Opera. In autumn 2026, he returns as Cavaradossi in all performances of Tosca.
Daniel Johansson has appeared at venues including the Royal Swedish Opera, Vienna State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, San Francisco Opera, Bregenz Festival, Semperoper Dresden, Norwegian National Opera, Malmö Opera and Theater an der Wien.
He made his debut at the Royal Swedish Opera in spring 2011 as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah and as Rodolfo in La bohème. Since then, he has appeared in more than 150 performances at the Royal Swedish Opera, in roles including Cavaradossi in Tosca, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Don José in Carmen, Fritz in Der ferne Klang and Calaf in Turandot.
During the 2025/26 season, Johansson sang the title role in Tannhäuser at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and Elis in Schreker’s Der Schatzgräber at Deutsche Oper Berlin. He also appeared as Siegmund in Die Walküre at Oper Köln.
In recent seasons, he has taken several significant steps into the dramatic repertoire. He made his role debut as Parsifal at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, sang Tannhäuser at Theater und Philharmonie Essen and made his debut as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde in Rouen. He has also appeared as Siegfried in both Siegfried and Götterdämmerung with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and made his role debut as Otello at the Norwegian National Opera. In summer 2025, he sang the title role in Glyndebourne’s first-ever production of Wagner’s Parsifal.
The 2023/24 season included Tristan in Rouen, his role debut as Calaf in Turandot at Malmö Opera and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at the Royal Swedish Opera. The previous year, he made his debut as Parsifal at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and sang Tannhäuser in Essen, as well as Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Royal Swedish Opera and the Norwegian National Opera.
Earlier in his career, Johansson portrayed roles including Pierre Bezukhov in Prokofiev’s War and Peace in Geneva and Elis in Schreker’s Der Schatzgräber at Deutsche Oper Berlin. He has sung the title roles in Lohengrin and Les Contes d’Hoffmann at Deutsche Oper Berlin and has appeared as Don José in Carmen at venues including the Bregenz Festival, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, Finnish National Opera, Norwegian National Opera and the Royal Swedish Opera.
Daniel Johansson studied at the University College of Opera in Stockholm. He won first prize in the Gösta Winbergh Award in 2007, received the Birgit Nilsson Scholarship in 2009 and won first prize in the Wilhelm Stenhammar International Music Competition in 2012.
In 2018, he was appointed Court Singer by H.M. The King of Sweden, and in 2021 he was awarded the Litteris et Artibus Medal for his outstanding achievements as an opera singer.
