The Swedish tenor Daniel Johansson is one of the leading dramatic tenors in the Nordic region, with a broad international career focused particularly on the Wagner and Puccini repertoire. He has appeared at venues such as the Royal Swedish Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, San Francisco Opera, the Bregenz Festival, Semperoper in Dresden, the Norwegian National Opera, Malmö Opera, and Theater an der Wien.
At the Royal Swedish Opera, he made his debut in spring 2011 as a soloist in Handel’s The Messiah and as Rodolfo in La bohème. Since then, he has appeared there in more than 150 performances, in recent years as Cavaradossi in Tosca, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, and Don José in Carmen.
In recent seasons, he has taken several major steps into the dramatic repertoire. He has made his role debut as Parsifal at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, sung Tannhäuser at Theater und Philharmonie Essen, and debuted as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde in Rouen as well as in a staged version in Essen. He has also performed Siegfried in both Siegfried and Götterdämmerung with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and made his debut as Otello at the Norwegian National Opera.
The 2023/24 season included Tristan in Rouen, his debut as Calaf in Turandot at Malmö Opera, and Pinkerton at the Royal Swedish Opera. In 2025, he reached another milestone when he sang the title role in Glyndebourne’s first-ever production of Wagner’s Parsifal.
Earlier in his career, he has portrayed roles such as Pierre Bezukhov in Prokofiev’s War and Peace in Geneva and Elis in Schreker’s Der Schatzgräber at Deutsche Oper Berlin. He has also performed the title roles in Lohengrin and Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and has frequently appeared as Don José at several of Europe’s leading opera houses.
Daniel Johansson studied at the University College of Opera in Stockholm. He has received several prestigious awards, including first prize in the Gösta Winbergh Award in 2007 and the Wilhelm Stenhammar International Music Competition in 2012.
In 2018, he was appointed Court Singer by H.M. the King of Sweden, and in 2021 he was awarded the Litteris et Artibus medal for his outstanding achievements as an opera singer.
