Italian baritone Gabriele Viviani makes his Royal Swedish Opera debut in autumn 2026 as Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca. Viviani has an extensive international career and has appeared on some of the world’s leading opera stages, including Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera, Paris Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and San Francisco Opera.
Gabriele Viviani was born in Lucca, Italy, and studied bassoon and singing at the Conservatorio Luigi Boccherini in his home town. He later studied singing with Graziano Polidori. Following successes in several international singing competitions, including the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari Mozart Competition and the Toti dal Monte Competition in Treviso, he made his debut as Valentin in Gounod’s Faust under Peter Maag.
Viviani has since established himself in a broad Italian and French repertoire. His roles include Scarpia in Tosca, Giorgio Germont in La traviata, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Marcello in La bohème, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Renato in Un ballo in maschera, Rodrigo in Don Carlo, Amonasro in Aida, Barnaba in La Gioconda, Tonio in Pagliacci, the title role in Macbeth and Carlo Gérard in Andrea Chénier.
Viviani made his Royal Opera House Covent Garden debut in 2009 as Marcello in La bohème and has since returned in roles including Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Giorgio Germont in La traviata and Scarpia in Tosca. At Teatro alla Scala, he has appeared in productions including Madama Butterfly, L’elisir d’amore, Pagliacci, Lucia di Lammermoor and Francesca da Rimini.
He has also appeared at Vienna State Opera, Opéra Bastille in Paris, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Real in Madrid, Teatro Regio in Turin, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Palau de les Arts in Valencia, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Arena di Verona and the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago.
Throughout his career, Gabriele Viviani has worked with conductors including Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, Nicola Luisotti, Daniele Rustioni and Daniel Oren, as well as directors including Franco Zeffirelli, Calixto Bieito, Damiano Michieletto and Christof Loy.
