Julia Vicic, from St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, began playing violin at the age of three. At the age of sixteen, she switched to viola, studying first with Kenneth Freed (Minnesota Orchestra) and then with Sabina Thatcher (Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra). In 2014 she began her Bachelor studies at Indiana University, studying with Professor Stephen Wyrczynski. After completing her Bachelor’s in 2018, she went on to pursue her Master’s at Rice University in Houston, Texas, studying with Professor James Dunham. In 2020, she moved to Saarbrücken to study with Professor Jone Kaliuanite at the Hochschule für Musik Saar. In January 2022, she was accepted into the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra Academy and participated in that program for two years. She has also been a substitute in orchestras such as the Louisville Orchestra and the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra.
During her undergraduate and graduate years, Julia spent summers at prestigious music programs such as the National Repertory Orchestra, where she won the solo competition and performed Miklós Rózsa’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Sarasota Music Festival, and the Texas Music Festival. In March 2020, she won the silver medal in the Strings Division of the Young Texas Artists Music Competition. Julia is proud to be a member of the Royal Swedish Orchestra.
