Swedish soprano Malin Byström made her role debut as Marie in Wozzeck at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 2023, returning to the role at the Royal Swedish Opera in autumn 2024. In autumn 2026, she returns to the Royal Swedish Opera to sing the title role in Tosca.
Malin Byström is a regular and highly sought-after guest on many of the world’s most prestigious stages, appearing frequently at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera and Bavarian State Opera. Her career has been marked by a series of acclaimed performances in roles such as Tosca, Salome and Minnie in La fanciulla del West. She has also appeared at houses including the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro Real in Madrid, Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and San Francisco Opera.
During the 2025/26 season, Malin Byström made an acclaimed role and house debut as Isolde in Tristan und Isolde at Dutch National Opera. She also appeared at the Vienna State Opera as Desdemona in Otello and Leonore in Fidelio, and sang Marie in a concert performance of Wozzeck with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Simon Rattle. In the spring, she joined Jonas Kaufmann on the Magische Töne tour and sang the title role in Rusalka at the Bavarian State Opera.
The 2024/25 season brought two major role debuts: Danae in a new production of Strauss’s Die Liebe der Danae at the Bavarian State Opera and Elisabeth in Tannhäuser at the Vienna State Opera. In summer 2024, Byström appeared as Minnie at the Munich Opera Festival, as Countess Madeleine in a concert performance of Capriccio at the Edinburgh International Festival, and in recitals at the Schubertíada Festival in Spain, Gothenburg Opera and Wigmore Hall in London.
During the 2023/24 season, Malin Byström took on two new roles: Elsa in Lohengrin at Dutch National Opera and the Woman in Schoenberg’s Erwartung at Teatro Real. She also appeared as Minnie in La fanciulla del West at the Vienna State Opera and returned to Vienna to reprise her role as Elsa in Lohengrin. The previous season saw her give an acclaimed new interpretation of Salome in a new production at the Vienna State Opera, a role she also performed at the Royal Opera House and in concert at the Edinburgh International Festival. The season also included Minnie in La fanciulla del West at the Bavarian State Opera, Tosca at both the Royal Opera House and the Royal Swedish Opera, and her role debut as Rusalka at Bergen National Opera.
Malin Byström has been a regular guest at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, where her roles have included Salome, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Mathilde in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell, Hélène in Les Vêpres siciliennes, Elettra in Idomeneo, Marguerite in Faust, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and Amalia in I masnadieri.
Malin Byström made her debut as Salome in 2017 with Dutch National Opera and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under Daniele Gatti. Her performance earned her the Female Singer of the Year award at the 2018 International Opera Awards. She has since sung the role at venues including the Royal Opera House, Vienna State Opera and Bolshoi Theatre, as well as at the Edinburgh International Festival.
In the 2020/21 season, Byström made her acclaimed Vienna State Opera debut as Elisabeth de Valois in Don Carlos. She has since returned regularly to the house in roles including Salome, Minnie in La fanciulla del West, Elsa in Lohengrin, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, Desdemona in Otello and Leonore in Fidelio.
Malin Byström has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera as Donna Elvira and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, in the title role of Arabella and as Marguerite in Faust. She has sung Tosca at Oper Frankfurt, Dutch National Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and Staatsoper Stuttgart, and has appeared as Countess Madeleine in Capriccio at Teatro Real in Madrid.
At the Royal Swedish Opera, Malin has appeared in numerous productions, including as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, the title roles in Fedora, Jenůfa and Tosca, Minnie in La fanciulla del West, Marie in Wozzeck, Desdemona in Otello, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and Romilda in Xerxes.
Among Malin Byström’s many other engagements are Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival, Donna Elvira in a filmed live broadcast of Don Giovanni with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Fiordiligi at the Bavarian State Opera, the title role in Thaïs at Gothenburg Opera and Palau de les Arts in Valencia, the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro in Aix-en-Provence and at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Amelia in Simon Boccanegra in Gothenburg and Elettra in Idomeneo at the Drottningholm Palace Theatre. In 2016, she made her San Francisco Opera debut as Jenůfa.
Earlier engagements have included Marguerite in Christoph Loy’s acclaimed production of Faust at Gothenburg Opera and Agathe in Der Freischütz in Bregenz. She has sung Donna Anna with René Jacobs in Baden-Baden, Leipzig and Gothenburg, as well as at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Malin Byström studied at the University College of Opera in Stockholm. In 2016, she was awarded the Litteris et Artibus medal by H.M. The King of Sweden for her outstanding artistic achievements as an opera singer, and in 2018 she was appointed Court Singer.
