ACT I
Tamino has lost hos way. Suddenly, he is attacked by a serpent. He faints, but is saved by three ladies. When he recovers he is introduced to Papageno the bird catcher. Tamino thinks Papageno rescued him from the serpent, which Papageno does not deny.
The three ladies return to show Tamino the picture of a girl, Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night. They tell him Pamina has been abducted by Sarastro and send Tamino to find her and set her free. A magic flute will protect him from danger. Papageno, who will accompany him, is given a chime of bells he can use in case he gets into trouble.
Pamina escapes from her captor Monostatos at the moment Papageno turns up. He tells her that Tamino is coming to help her. Three boys have shown Tamino the way to the Temple of Wisdom where he is told that Pamina is alive. He uses his flute to call Papageno, but he arrives too late. Monostatos and his guard capture Papageno and Pamina, but Papageno manages to cast a spell on them using his bells.
ACT II
Sarastro and the council of priests decide that Tamino is worthy of initiation and that he shall marry Pamina. The first trial requires silence, even when Tamino and Papageno are being seduced by women. Monostatos tries to force himself on Pamina who is saved at the last moment by the Queen of the Night.
The Queen arrives at nightfall to give her daughter a dagger and to tell her to kill Sarastro. Pamina hears Tamino’s flute, which leads her to him, but she is met by silence. She believes his love for her is over.
Papageno is finding it hard to take the trials seriously. All he wants is a glass of wine and a girl. Pamina is devastated by Tamino’s silence and would rather die, but she is prevented from killing herself by the three boys who tell her that Tamino still loves her. She is reunited with Tamino. They will undergo the final test together.
While this is going on, Papageno has used his bells to find Papagena.
The Queen of the Night and Monostatos fail to prevent the reunion between Tamino and Pamina, who are greeted like gods by Sarastro and his priests.

At what time do I have to be at the Opera before the performance?
We recommend that you arrive at least half an hour before the performance begins. If you can arrive earlier, it's even better: 45 minutes before the start of the performance, there is a free audience introduction in the Golden Foyer - an excellent way to approach the performance! Please note that once the performance has started, no one will be allowed into the hall until after the first intermission.
-
It's my first time at the Opera - what do I do?
We have put together some useful tips for your visit. Otherwise, our best advice is to arrive on time - discover the Opera House, leave your coat in the cloakroom, eat or drink something. AND, ask our ushers - they'll be happy to help! Outerwear and bags should be left in the cloakroom for safety and evacuation reasons.
-
Can my ticket be rebooked or cancelled if I or someone in my party is ill?
You can rebook tickets yourself on the website up to 24 hours before the start of the performance within the the current season. Tickets cannot be cancelled (read more in our general terms and conditions).
-
Can you eat and drink at the Opera?
Of course you can! Our partner Restaurang Grodan is on the ground floor facing Strömgatan - take the opportunity to book a table ahead of your visit! Each floor also has a service with drinks and snacks, at the stalls' café there is a slightly larger selection. We advice you to pre-book the intermission service so it is ready and waiting for you during the interval!
