Farewell Concert at the Opera_dress rehearsal

Since 1898, the auditorium at Gustav Adolfs torg has been filled with opera, ballet and music. Now, as the Opera House prepares to close for at least five years of renovation, audiences and artists come together for one final weekend to celebrate everything we have experienced here – and to bid farewell to the house for now.

A Farewell Concert at the Opera House brings together music spanning several centuries. The Royal Swedish Orchestra performs Mozart, Dvořák and Puccini alongside works by Swedish composer Jacob Mühlrad. Vocal soloists and the Royal Swedish Opera Chorus join the orchestra, with Music Director Alan Gilbert conducting. Several of Mühlrad’s works will be performed in arrangements created especially for the occasion, and he has curated the programme together with Gilbert.

And the farewell is written into the music itself. The concert concludes with the finale of Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 45, the Farewell Symphony. In one of the most famous endings in music history, the orchestra’s musicians leave the stage one by one, until only a few remain.

One final weekend together at the Opera House. A concert celebrating the music, the memories and the audience – before the doors close and a new chapter begins.
